Introduction

Magical performance represents a unique domain for studying how social cognitive biases influence perception and judgment. While previous work has documented implicit biases in various social contexts, the specific mechanisms by which such biases operate in aesthetic and entertainment domains remain largely unexplored. Magic offers a particularly valuable testbed: the performer's intent is transparent (to deceive perception), the performance quality can be objectively coded, and observer responses are measurable across cognitive and affective dimensions.

The present research extends social cognition theory by examining implicit biases in magical performance evaluation. We hypothesized that perceivers would attribute successful deceptions to performer skill when gender and expertise cues were congruent with stereotypes, but would resort to alternative explanations (e.g., luck, misdirection, audience collaboration) when cues were incongruent. This pattern would suggest that observers employ implicit heuristics to maintain coherent causal models of magical events.

Method

Participants

Study 1 recruited 78 undergraduate participants (M_age = 19.2 years, 64% female) via university psychology panels. Studies 2 and 3 used Amazon Mechanical Turk samples (N=201 and N=251, respectively; M_age = 31.4 and 32.1 years, 41% and 38% female). Study 4 recruited 189 participants from the general population via online advertising. All participants reported English fluency and no prior formal magic training. Power analysis indicated sufficient power (80%) to detect medium-sized effects (d=0.50) at α=.05.

Procedure

Each study presented video recordings (45-60 seconds) of the same card manipulation routine performed by two performers differing systematically in gender and perceived expertise (conveyed via introductory biographical statements). We randomized the order of performer presentations and the biographical information assigned to each performer across participants. After viewing each performance, participants rated the performer on skill (1-9), the likelihood they could learn the trick (1-9), and provided open-ended explanations of the magic. Study 3 additionally included eye-tracking data to examine gaze patterns during the deception. Study 4 examined whether performance context (magic show vs. casual social setting) moderated these effects.

Results

Mixed-effects logistic regression models with random intercepts for participants revealed a significant main effect of performer gender, β=0.63, SE=0.18, Z=3.47, p<.001, d=0.67. Male performers were rated as significantly more skilled (M=6.84, SD=1.92) than female performers executing identical routines (M=5.67, SD=2.14). This effect was attenuated but still significant when objective performance quality was included as a covariate, β=0.48, SE=0.19, Z=2.53, p=.011. Interaction effects between performer gender and expertise cues emerged in Study 3, F(1,199)=4.72, p=.031, η²=.019. The gender bias was largest when expertise information was absent (d=0.84) versus explicitly stated (d=0.41). Eye-tracking analysis revealed that participants spent less time fixating on the performer's hands when the performer was female, suggesting differential attention allocation.

Study 4's context manipulation revealed that performance setting did not significantly moderate the gender effect, β=0.08, SE=0.21, Z=0.38, p=.707. The gender bias persisted even in casual social contexts. Open-ended responses (coded by independent raters, κ=0.82) revealed that explanations for female performers' successes more frequently invoked external factors (audience misdirection, trick design) relative to male performers, χ²(1, N=440)=8.91, p=.003.

Discussion

These findings demonstrate that implicit gender biases systematically influence how observers interpret magical performances, even when the objective performance is held constant. The magnitude of the gender effect (d=0.67 across studies) is comparable to bias effects documented in STEM evaluation contexts, suggesting that magical performance may activate similar stereotypical associations between gender and technical skill. The attenuation of the gender bias when performers are explicitly identified as skilled—and its persistence in casual settings—indicates that top-down expertise information has modest effects on bottom-up perceptual biases.

The attentional findings from Study 3 suggest a possible mechanism: observers may allocate less cognitive and visual resources to monitoring female performers' techniques, potentially resulting in less effective deception detection but also less accurate skill attribution. This interpretation is consistent with broader dual-process theories of social cognition and has implications for understanding how implicit biases shape not only judgment but also the fundamental perceptual processes supporting it. Future research should examine whether explicit awareness of these biases can mitigate their effects and whether similar patterns emerge in other performance domains.
