Introduction
Emotion regulation—the ability to modulate the intensity and duration of emotional states—is central to psychological well-being and social functioning (Gross & John, 2003). While substantial research has examined individual differences in emotion regulation capacity, less attention has been directed to the social contextual factors that facilitate or impede effective emotion management. Classic work on social facilitation and inhibition (Zajonc, 1965) suggests that the mere presence of others influences performance, yet the specific mechanisms by which social context affects emotion regulation remain poorly understood.
Recent theoretical work emphasizes that emotion regulation often serves an interpersonal function, with individuals managing their emotional displays to achieve relational goals (Eisenberg & Fabes, 1992). This perspective suggests that the presence of a responsive social partner may enhance emotion regulation by providing both explicit encouragement and implicit signalling that emotional expression is acceptable. The present study employs a controlled laboratory procedure to experimentally manipulate social context and assess its effects on emotion regulation outcomes.
Method
Participants
Thirty-six undergraduate students (mean age 20 years; 20 female) participated in exchange for partial course credit or $10 compensation. All participants reported normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing and English as their primary language. Two participants were excluded due to equipment failure, leaving 34 participants in the final sample.
Procedure
Participants viewed three 4-minute emotionally evocative film clips (adapted from Gross & Levenson, 1995) selected to induce sadness, anger, and fear respectively. The clips were professionally edited scenes from mainstream films; previous normative testing had established their effectiveness for emotion induction. Between clips, participants completed filler tasks lasting 2 minutes.
Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (a) viewing alone with awareness that they would later discuss their reactions (Alone-Interview), (b) viewing alone with no expectation of social interaction (Alone-Private), or (c) viewing with a same-sex confederate seated beside them who was trained to offer supportive comments ("That looks really tough"; "I can see why that would upset you"). Confederate responses were scripted and timed to occur during natural pauses in film presentation.
Self-reported affect was assessed before and after each clip using visual analogue scales for sadness (0-100) and anger/fear. Continuous facial behaviour was videotaped throughout the session and later coded by trained raters blind to condition using the Facial Action Coding System (Ekman & Friesen, 1978). Codes targeted brow lowering (action unit 4), eye tightening (action unit 6), and other features indexing emotional expression intensity.
Results
A mixed analysis of variance with repeated measures for film clip type revealed a significant main effect of social condition on post-clip sadness ratings, F(2, 31) = 4.82, p < .05. Post-hoc pairwise comparisons (Bonferroni-corrected) indicated that participants in the confederate condition reported lower sadness (M = 42.3, SD = 18.1) than those in the Alone-Private condition (M = 61.8, SD = 21.4), t(31) = 2.51, p < .05. The Alone-Interview condition (M = 52.1, SD = 19.6) did not differ significantly from either group.
Facial action analysis paralleled self-report findings. The confederate condition produced lower intensity of emotion-related facial actions (mean frequency of emotion units per minute: M = 3.2, SD = 1.4) compared to the Alone-Private condition (M = 5.1, SD = 1.8), t(31) = 2.98, p < .01. Interestingly, anticipated social interaction (Alone-Interview condition) did not significantly reduce facial expression (M = 4.8, SD = 1.7), suggesting that actual responsive social presence, not merely the anticipation of evaluation, drives regulation effects.
Discussion
The present findings demonstrate that the presence of a responsive social partner significantly enhances emotion regulation capacity, as indexed by both subjective and facial expression measures. The pattern of results argues against a simple evaluation apprehension explanation; the mere anticipation of discussing one's reactions proved insufficient to reduce emotional responding. Rather, real-time supportive feedback appears critical for emotion regulatory effects.
These results extend social functionalist perspectives on emotion by demonstrating that emotion regulation is facilitated when social conditions validate the appropriateness of emotional experience. Future research incorporating physiological measures (cardiac, electrodermal) may clarify whether social support affects the underlying emotional state or merely the outward display. Additionally, individual differences in attachment style and prior social experiences may modulate the degree to which social presence enhances regulation, warranting investigation in samples with diverse relationship histories.
